Healthy, Natural Products? Or Bottles of Toxin?

CY_Find Your Better.jpg

Long gone are my days of going in to a department store in search of a new eyeshadow palette or perfect lipstick. I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand the smell of perfume let alone someone almost forcing it upon my skin. Little did I know what I was exposing myself to in such a short period of time while shopping for new makeup (tons and tons of harmful toxins!). Not to mention the fact that I was spending almost half of my paycheck on makeup four times a year.

Long gone are my days of chancing my luck with a “natural” facial cleanser and “natural” moisturizer that left my face feeling dry and dull. Yeah, maybe if I added some coconut oil to the moisturizer I would not feel so chapped, but I was still wondering “is this stuff even good for me”?

Using Beautycounter products means you never have to worry about toxic additives.

When my friend Sarah first approached me with the opportunity to try Beautycounter’s products I almost brushed it aside. Here is the thing though. I could not ignore what I was hearing. I found out that at the time, the US only banned 11 harmful chemicals from the skincare industry and the EU, by comparison had banned over 1,300. We’ve now banned 30 chemicals from personal care products in the US but we’re dangerously behind. I found out that Beautycounter was on a mission to get safer products in to the hands of everyone. I found out that what companies were calling “natural” didn’t really mean anything. I started doing my own research and using the Environmental Working Group app to rate the products that I was using. You can only imagine how shocked I was when I found out that half of my products were rated a 7, 8 and sometimes even a 9 (the lower the better). Here I was, a new resident of Colorado where I was doing my best to simplify life and really tap in to my best self. I was coaching for a clean eating company and I decided to get my yoga teacher training certificate. I was putting all the good stuff in my body, continuing to focus on my physical body through yoga and the great outdoors, but there was a missing link. What about what I was putting on my body? Did you know that our skin is our largest organ? Take a minute to think about that. Your skin is the largest organ you have. Don’t you think it matters what you put on your skin?

So I gave it try. Not only did I fall in love with the skincare line, I actually tossed all of the department store makeup that I was so proud of, my “collection”. I have not looked back. I gave it a try because I heard what was being said to me. Sarah kept saying that I deserve the safest. I have not been personally affected by cancer, but at the time I knew of a few friends that developed cancer and I just did not get it. The reality is that we don’t know what causes some cancers. What we do know is that it could be environmental factors along with genetics and other various reasons. So I said to myself, “Why not do everything you can to limit your exposure Colleen? And, your families”. Fast forward to October of 2018. I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called Hashimotos. It is believed that I have been suffering from Hashimotos for probably 10 or more years based on my symptoms. I am happy to finally have the answers and am on the road to healing. The diagnosis put a little spark in my step when it comes to spreading the mission of Beautycounter. There are various causes for development Hashimotos, but autoimmune disease is spreading throughout the US and I believe that if we continue to spread the word about using safer products with less environmental toxins we can slow the progression of these diseases. For years, Beautycounter has been working tirelessly to educate everyone about the importance of knowing what is in your products. And, just this past Saturday, February 8th the issue was elevated to a new level. The New York Times published this article that dives deep in to the realities of the personal care industry. This article is an example of how far we have come and is a glimpse of hope that big changes are coming.
